Stewards Fellowship
Join a growing global network of university faculty who serve as leaders of health security education and stewardship. This is an opportunity to work with like-minded international educators and experts toward a goal of developing and implementing robust health security curriculum at your home institution, and to more broadly raise awareness and impact your community of health stakeholders.
Program Overview
The Health Security Stewards Fellowship is a yearlong program designed for university faculty and staff who are interested in broadening the scope of their life sciences curricula to include topics on health security. They will become champions of change for their universities, as they learn novel teaching methods to relay the concepts and practices of health security. Each course curriculum is based upon individual interest in the following topics:
- Science Diplomacy
- Sustainable Development
- Food Security & Agroterrorism
- Global Infectious Disease & Surveillance
- Anti-Microbial Resistance
- Frameworks for International Health Security
- Dual-Use Research of Concern
- Bioterrorism & Nonproliferation
- Advocacy & Evidence-Based Policymaking
- Science & Technology Policy
- Gender Disparity and Development
- Other Special Topics
The Fellowship begins with participation in the weeklong Health Security Stewards Training Institute. This includes special lectures, sessions, workshops, and table-top exercises led by HSP staff and mentors. The fellowship continues with a yearlong virtual curriculum of bi-weekly modules through which Fellows continue to practice teaching various health security topics.
Eligibility
- A citizen of, and residing in the country in which the Fellowship is currently being sponsored
- Full-time or adjunct faculty in the following disciplines: medicine, veterinary medicine, life sciences, public health, science & technology, global health and development, among others of relevance
- Working English proficiency
- Application materials outlining your interest in health security and goals for the Fellowship
- Commitment to participate in all aspects of the program including:
- One week Health Security Stewards Fellowship Training Institute
- Yearlong virtual mentoring by experts
- Development and delivery of health security curriculum at home institution
- Conduct workshops/seminars to engage the wider community of health stakeholders
- Completion of required activities, assessments, and evaluations of the program
Selection Criteria
- Interest in health security issues
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective curricula and educational tools
- Leadership capacity to share knowledge with stakeholders in country and in the region
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse multi-disciplinary teams
- Your Institution’s commitment and support of your participation in the program
Expectations & Opportunities
In order to successfully complete the Health Security Stewards Fellowship program, Fellows must:
- Attend and actively engage at the weeklong Stewards Training Institute
- Actively participate in the virtual curriculum during the program year, including weekly webinar lectures, readings, activities and discussions
- Successfully deliver one webinar session on a health security topic of your choosing
- Collaborate with peers to develop locally-led projects to address health security concerns
Below is an estimated time commitment, which Fellows are expected to complete:
- Training Institute: 28 hours (3.5 days)
- Webinar Lectures: 16 hours (14 modules) +2 pre/post virtual curriculum sessions
- Preparation for one lecture on assigned module: 6 hours
- Background reading for modules: 15 hours (1 hour/module)
- Total: 65 hours
