UVAS Continues To Spearhead Biosafety Trainings In Pakistan

This past November, the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) in Lahore, Pakistan partnered with HSP to conduct an advanced level biosafety workshop at the UVAS Pattoki Campus. This is part of a series of biosafety workshops and zoonotic disease seminars being conducted by UVAS as part of HSP's Centers of Excellence program.

This workshop comprised twenty participants, who were selected following an August 2018 basic awareness raising workshop, on the basis of their scores and commitment towards biosafety. Laboratory professionals and researchers representing different public and private diagnostic and research facilities across Pakistan (Kashmir, Interior Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) were trained in this workshop.

Participants learned proper donning and doffing of personal protective equipment, guidelines for safe and secure pathogen shipment and transportation, and how to properly use biological safety cabinets. Participants were given a series of scenarios as risk assessment exercises, which will empower them to conduct assessments and take proper action to ensure biosafety in their own laboratories. Another highlight of this workshop was a keynote lecture on biosafety practices when dealing specifically with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).
