National Surveillance Strategy for AMR in Aquaculture

We are thrilled to announce the launch of Pakistan's first National Surveillance Strategy for AMR in Aquaculture, a groundbreaking initiative developed by Health Security Partners, in collaboration with DAI, and supported by the Fleming Fund Country Grant Pakistan. This strategy represents a pivotal step toward improving the management of antibiotic use in aquaculture, with far-reaching benefits for human, animal, and environmental health. Given aquaculture's critical connection to broader ecosystems, this initiative will be instrumental in monitoring antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within fisheries and curbing its inter-sectoral spread.

The strategy was developed through extensive consultations with federal and provincial stakeholders, including fisheries departments, academic institutions, the Aquaculture and Fisheries Program, National Agricultural Research Centre, the Fisheries Development Board, aquaculture farmers, and partner agencies. It focuses on establishing baseline data on resistant microorganisms and strengthening AMR surveillance systems in aquaculture. Together, we are setting new standards in sustainable aquaculture practices to ensure a healthier and more resilient future for Pakistan!
