Strengthening Research Security Across Morocco’s Life Sciences Institutions

From September 24–26, 2026, Health Security Partners (HSP), in partnership with the Biorisk Management Association of Morocco (BMAM) and Ibn Zohr University, convened 33 participants from 15 Moroccan life sciences universities and research institutions in Agadir for a three-day Research Security Training workshop.

The workshop brought together researchers, biosafety professionals, IT and cybersecurity specialists, laboratory managers, and institutional leaders to explore practical approaches to strengthening research security and protecting sensitive biological research.

Key areas of discussion included:
  1. Identifying cybersecurity and cyberbiosecurity gaps affecting sensitive data, technologies, and intellectual property.
  2. Turning research security priorities into practical institutional action plans and SOPs.
  3. Improving coordination across scientific, IT, biosafety, and leadership teams.
  4. Establishing and implementing Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBCs).
Through interactive discussions, case studies, and a tabletop exercise, participants identified concrete steps their institutions can take to strengthen governance, oversight, and security practices.

The workshop marks an important step toward continued collaboration and institutional security strengthening to advance research security in the life sciences across Morocco.
